Bowl #1, natural ash glaze and wadding marks
A bowl with natural ash glazing. Both inside and outside of the bowl are only glazed naturally by the firing process, during which flying wood ash settles on the surface of the item and forms a glassy coating.
On the inside of the bowl, there are three wadding marks. During wood firing, ceramic works are lifted from kiln shelves on top of small balls of sandy clay, called waddings, to prevent items from getting stuck to the shelves. This part of the firing process is visible in wadding marks, the spots where the original lighter colour of the clay has not been exposed to flames and ash.
This bowl is carefully handcrafted and brought to life in a traditional wood-fired anagama-kiln, undergoing several days of continuous firing. This method, in which intense live flames and flying ash are in direct contact with the ceramic works, results in each piece becoming truly one of a kind.
Height 7 cm
Width 13,5 cm
Weight 361 g
Food safe. Washing by hand is recommended.
