Tea bowl (chawan) #4, shino & natural ash glaze
A tea bowl (chawan) with underlying shino glaze and layered areas of natural ash glaze on top. The surface has beautiful shifts in tones from grays with greenish tint to vivid oranges and deep browns. There are glossy areas with bold crackling as well as more subtle matte textures with small crystallized spots. The foot ring has some particularly deep red colours.
This tea bowl is carefully handcrafted and brought to life in a traditional wood-fired anagama-kiln, undergoing several days of continuous firing. This method, in which intense live flames and flying ash are in direct contact with the ceramic works, results in each piece becoming truly one of a kind.
